As part of a three day visit to Rome from December 1st to December 3rd, 2021, University President Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., celebrated mass on the occasion of the first week of Advent at Santa Maria in Domnica, the local parish church in rione Celio, in the presence of study abroad students, faculty, staff and fellows in Rome. Students and staff contributed to the ceremony with readings, personal prayers and chants. Mass was celebrated by Rev. Fr. Austin I. Collins, C.S.C., Vice President from Mission Engagement and Church Affairs and by Rev. Fr. Richard S. Bullene, C.S.C., School of Architecture Assistant Dean and Academic Director of the Rome Studies Program.
The Mass was celebrated to mark the end of a successful fall 2021 semester in Rome.
“The opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to celebrate the completion of the Gateway's first, in-person semester since the start of the pandemic, together with Fr. Jenkins within our home parish, was truly extraordinary,” comments Mallory Nardin, Director of Programming, Student Development & Community Engagement.
Rev. Jenkins' gathering with the Notre Dame community in Rome took place after a series of meetings with high-ranking Vatican officials, where he discussed Notre Dame's role in the Church and in Catholic education.
Joining Fr. Jenkins was Rev. Austin Collins, C.S.C., Vice President for mission engagement and Church affairs; Vice President and Chief of Staff Ann Firth; and Joel Curran, Vice President for public affairs and communications.
