Funding Opportunities
The Center for Italian Studies is currently accepting applications for research and travel funding for Summer and Fall 2022. All research travel will need to be approved by the university as official business travel and be conducted in accordance with the University policy on international travel. Please contact italianstudies@nd.edu with any questions.
The Center for Italian Studies contributes to the funding of research in Italian Studies by subsidizing a number of grants and fellowships for undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, and visiting researchers in Italian Studies. Click the links below to find out more.

Biblioteca Ambrosiana Research Awards
With the Medieval Institute, the Center co-sponsors the Biblioteca Ambrosiana Research Awards. These awards enable individual scholars or groups of scholars—including graduate students and postdoctoral fellows—to pursue projects in connection with the Biblioteca Ambrosiana and its holdings in Milan and Notre Dame. Please send a C.V., a proposal of less than 750 words that describes the project, and a detailed budget to italianstudies@nd.edu. Cost sharing is encouraged and should be included in the proposed budget. Open to researchers outside of Notre Dame and to Notre Dame faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students.
Peter R. D'Agostino Research Travel Grants
With the Cushwa Center for the Study of American Catholicism, the Center co-sponsors the Peter R. D'Agostino Research Travel Grants to facilitate the study of the American past from an international perspective. This competitive, annual award supports research in Roman archives for a significant publication project on U.S. Catholic history. Open to researchers outside of Notre Dame and to Notre Dame faculty.
Dante Studies Travel Grants
With the Devers Family Program in Dante Studies, the Center co-sponsors several travel grants to support research by Notre Dame faculty and graduate students in Italy, but also for faculty and graduate students from other institutions whose research would benefit from on-site access to Notre Dame's special collections on Dante, the Ambrosiana archive, or other of its Italian holdings. The Italian Studies Library Research Award
The Center for Italian Studies and Notre Dame International jointly administer an Italian Studies Library Research Award. This award provides grant funding for scholars to use the collections of the Hesburgh Libraries for research in Italian studies. Research awards are intended to defray the cost of travel and accommodation for research visits of one to three weeks in duration. Applications from international locations are encouraged. Ravarino Family Italian Scholars Summer Grant
Thanks to a generous gift from the Ravarino Family, the Center sponsors travel grants for graduate and undergraduate students who are will pursue research or a formal summer language program in Italy. Click here to download the application.
Rome International Scholars Program
With Notre Dame International, the Center co-sponsors undergraduate research in Italy through the Rome International Scholars Program. Open to Notre Dame undergraduates.
The Diana M. Sciola Grant for Undergraduate or Graduate Research in Italy
The Center encourages Notre Dame undergraduates and graduate students in all Arts and Letters disciplines whose research interests address the impact of Catholic traditions upon Italian artistic culture to submit proposals to the Sciola Grant Program, which is administered by the Institute for Scholarship in the Liberal Arts. In order to be eligible for funding, research must take place in Italy. Open to Notre Dame undergraduate and graduate students.
Sellick Travel Grants for Research in Italy
The Jay A. and Sara L. Sellick Endowment for Excellence in Italian Studies, in memory of John A. ('53) and Juli Ann Sellick provides support for undergraduate, graduate student, and faculty research and travel to Italy and the Rome Global Gateway. Click here to download the application.
