Martina Piperno (Sapienza Università di Roma), Bart Van Den Bossche (MDRN/ Katholieke Univeristeit Leuven), and Chiara Zampieri (Katholieke Univeristeit Leuven) will discuss the reception of Etruscan material culture in the modernist period.

Speakers
Martina Piperno (Sapienza Università di Roma) is Assistant Professor of Italian Studies. She earned her PhD form the University of Warwick UK in 2016, and she held postdoctoral positions at University College Cork, in Ireland (2017-2019), and KU Leuven (2019-2021). She was Assistant Professor in Italian at the University of Durham, UK (2021-2023). Her first book, Rebuilding Post-Revolutionary Italy. Leopardi and Vico’s “New Science” (Oxford 2018) has won the Scaglione Prize for Italian Studies issued by the Modern Language Association of America. She has recently published the monograph L’antichità crudele. Etruschi e Italici nella letteratura italiana del Novecento (Rome 2020).
Bart Van Den Bossche (MDRN/ Katholieke Univeristeit Leuven) is Professor of Italian Literature and founding member of the research lab MDRN based at KU Leuven. His main research areas are modern and contemporary Italian literature, in particular, myth and literature, avant-garde, modernism, realism and poetry. He is currently involved in a large-scale research project on “Literary Knowledge in the Modernist Period”. He published a book on Cesare Pavese (“Nulla è veramente accaduto”. Strategie discorsive del mito nell’opera di Cesare Pavese, Lovanio-Firenze, Leuven University Press-Franco Cesati editore, 2001), and a book on myth in twentieth-century literature Trasformazioni ed elaborazioni: il mito nella letteratura italiana del Novecento (Leuven-Firenze, Leuven University Press-Franco Cesati editore, 2007). Among the most recent volumes he co-edited Futurism. A microhistory, eds. Chiara Zampieri (MDRN / Katholieke Universiteit Leuven) is Junior Researcher at KU Leuven (Belgium). She holds a PhD in Comparative Literature from KU Leuven. Her thesis, titled Voix d’Étrurie: la représentation de l’antiquité étrusque dans la littérature européenne (1840-1940), was part of the larger interdisciplinary research programme Literary Knowledge (1890-1950): Modernisms and the Sciences in Europe. Within this large programme, her research project Modern Etruscans, focused on the reception of the Etruscans and their culture in the French, Italian and English literature of the modernist period. She actively collaborates with the Museo Nazionale Etrusco di Villa Giulia, in Rome. She is part of the research networks Patrimonialitté (which investigates the relationships between literature and heritage), and RIMEL (Recherches Interdisciplinaires sur la Muséographie de l’Éxposition de la Littérature et du Livre).
