“Brendan Behan: Rescuing the Writer from the Myth” - An International Conference

Thursday, September 25- Friday, September 26 at Notre Dame's Rome Global Gateway

Chaired by Barry McCrea, Keough Family Professor of Irish Studies and Professor of English and John McCourt, Università Roma Tre, this two-day conference will reassess the life and work of one of Ireland’s best known, most controversial, and least studied writers. It will explore the author’s writings in both English and Irish while taking stock of his overall achievement and legacy. Speakers will include Enrico Terrinoni (University for Foreigners, Perugia), Barry McCrea (University of Notre Dame), John McCourt (Università Roma Tre), Janet Behan (Behan’s niece and author of the acclaimed Brendan at the Chelsea), Declan Kiberd (University of Notre Dame), Maria DiBattista (Princeton University), Michael Pierse (Queen's University Belfast), John Brannigan (University College Dublin), Derek Hand (St Patrick’s College, Drumcondra, Dublin), Michael Cronin (National University of Ireland, Maynooth), Adrian Dunbar (actor, played Behan in Brendan at the Chelsea), Stephen Douds (independent filmmaker), Lucilla Lo Priore (Università Roma Tre) and Mícheál MacCraith (St Isodore's College Rome, formerly of N.U.I. Galway).
