New Library acquisition: Stvdio d’architettvra civile

The Architecture Library has recently acquired the following item: 

Domenico de Rossi.  Stvdio d’architettvra civile….. Rome, printed for the author, 1702-1721.  Three volumes in one.  Includes 287 engraved plates, many of which fold out.  First edition.

Domenico de Rossi’s Stvdio d’architettvra civile records architectural elevations and frontal views of Baroque palazzi and churches in Rome, including unexecuted designs of Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Francesco Borromini.  Superbly and precisely engraved, the plates document contemporary architectural decoration and served to familiarize many with the Roman baroque style.  The work of a large number of Italian architects, including Michelangelo Buonarroti, Raphael, Pietro da Cortona, and Giacomo della Porta, is included.

Three volumes, each of which documents different aspects of 17th century Roman baroque decoration, are bound together:

Studio d'architettura civile sopra varj ornamenti di cappelle, e diversi sepolcri tratti da più chiese di Roma colle loro facciate, fianchi, piante, e misure. Opera de' più celebri architetti de' nostri tempi, Rome, 1711. Dedicated to Cardinal Francesco Acquaviva d'Aragona.
