La Resurrezione, an oratorio by George Frideric Handel set to a libretto by Carlo Sigismondo Capece (1652–1728), was first performed on Easter Sunday of 1708 in Rome. The Italian libretto contains lines excerpted from St. John’s Gospel, and draws on the tradition of Christ’s descent into Limbo, which can be found in the Apostles’ and Athanasian Creeds, and is also referenced by Dante in the Divina Commedia
