The Department of Rare Books and Special Collections has recently acquired the following items:
Papal Conclave Broadsheets. 1700-1774.
This collection of five separately issued papal conclave broadsheets, dating from 1700-1774, announce the deaths of pontiffs and depict the proceedings for the election of their successors. Broadsheets such as these educated the public about important events and proceedings at the Vatican but have survived in small quantities due to their ephemeral nature.
The earliest of this set, by Domenico de Rossi, is also the most elaborate. It documents the conclave of 1700, a deliberation that lasted 46 days until resolved with the election of Cardinal Giovanni Francesco Albani as Pope Clement XI. Rossi pictures the 66 Cardinal-electors in great detail, including the method by which food would be delivered to them via ruote, or small rotating doors, during their period in conclave.
