Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio: Literature, Doctrine, Reality is an important collection of nineteen essays that originally appeared between 1991 and 2017. Twelve essays are devoted to Dante, four to Petrarch, two to Boccaccio and one to Cavalcanti, offering an overarching exemplary record of Zyg Barański’s studies in the field of medieval Italian literature and culture, spanning a great part of his career at the diverse universities at which he taught in the UK and the US. In close dialogue with the scholarly tradition on medieval Italian literature, the author explores how each of the tre corone self-fashioned their own identity and literary authority as they conceived new literary forms, testing the potentials and the boundaries of vernacular literature in fourteenth-century Italy.
Zygmunt G. Barański is Emeritus R. L. Canala Professor of Romance Languages and Literaures at the University of Notre Dame and Serena Professor of Italian Emeritus at the University of Cambridge. He is the author of numerous studies on Dante’s work and its reception, on the medieval Italian literary tradition with particular focus on Cavalcanti, Petrarch and Boccaccio, on contemporary Italian literature, culture and cinema and especially Pasolini.
