Numerous Italian poets have inspired composers to write great works of art, but perhaps none had so great an influence as Petrarca and Dante.  On February 29, 2012, faculty members from Italian Studies at Notre Dame will present a special concert of music and the poetry that inspired it.  The program will consist of readings of the three sonnets of Petrarca and the three musical pieces for piano that Franz Liszt shaped upon these poems (sonnets #47, #104, and #123), as well as a commentary on Dante’s Divine Comedy followed by a musical performance of Liszt’s Dante Sonata for piano - a harrowing journey through the torment, grief and eternal pain of hell with brief glimpses of the ecstasy of heaven.
