The Department of Rare Books and Special Collections has recently acquired the following item:
Ameto di Messere Giovanni Boccaccio: Con le osservationi in uolgare gra[m]matica sopra esso di Hieronimo Claricio. Milan: nella officina Minutiana a ispesa di Andrea Caluo, A di .X. de Giugnio. 1520.
This early edition of Boccaccio’s Ameto is the first Milanese printing of the text. It is prefaced by a dedicatory letter by the printer Andrea Calvo, recognized as an important early statement in favor of the use of vernacular Italian. Carlo Dionisotti classifies the preface as “il più franco e veemente manifesto a favore della nuova lingua e letteratura volgare apparso a stampa in Italia nel primo ventennio del Cinquecento.” (Dionisotti, Girolamo Claricio, in Studi sul Boccaccio, II, 1964, pp. 332-3).
The text is edited by Girolamo Claricio of Imola, who also published Apologia contro detrattori della Poesia di M. Giovanni Boccaccio, poeta e oratore dignissimo, con alcune menimissime osservationi in volgare grammatica sopra l'Amorosa Visione in 1521. Special Collections owns a 1531 reprint of this latter text, available at call number Rare Books Small PQ 4270 .A5 1531.
